The black papier-mâché sewing box that’s now on display in the Old Treasury Building’s ‘Belongings’ exhibition would once have been a commonplace essential in many homes. This box and others like it – filled with needles, threads, thimbles, scissors, ribbons and buttons – helped women of the past create new looks from old clothes.
Conscious of the current, pressing need for circular and sustainable fashion, dress historian Lorinda Cramer gives a talk on Zoom exploring how sewing boxes were used, what could be achieved using the tools they held, and what vital life lessons are offered to us from the past.
